The Dundas Wharf Project

Dundas Wharf, at the junction of the Kennet & Avon and Somerset Coal canals, is the only undeveloped wharf left on the K&A. At the Wharf boats from the Coal Canal were gauged to determine the toll to be paid, this was done by lifting gauging blocks onto the boat and measuring the draft. There is a small tollhouse, warehouse and crane still standing, many people know and love this area of the Canal but although lots of important work has been undertaken on the aqueduct itself and more recently the cross over bridge, the wharf has become rather scruffy and needs a good deal of remedial work to bring the area back to the show piece it should be.

We have the promise of funding and materials from the Trust and British Waterways, tools and equipment will be supplied from Claverton Pumping Station. There will be tasks for many different skills do not think that only engineers are required we need to have a flexible team but the main ingredient is an interest in the canal and the desire to spend some time on it. That should be easy as we are working in one of the most spectacular and interesting parts of the canal. We are also interested to learn more about the area so if anyone has any pictures or stories connected with Dundas we would like to hear from you. So if you want to help put the Trust back on the canal in a hands on fashion please contact me on 01761 432811 or contact the Devizes office
